Traditional Marketing

Why is attribution difficult in traditional marketing?

  • A customer may hear a radio ad, see a billboard, receive a flyer, and buy later, making the sale difficult to tie to one paid offline placement. The campaign may influence the buyer, but the exact path from first notice to final purchase is often unclear.
  • The same person may meet the message several times before calling, visiting the store, or asking about the offer.
  • That response may also happen days after the ad was seen or heard, which makes the source harder to confirm.
  • In many cases, staff can ask how the customer heard about the business, but the answer may be incomplete or based on memory.
  • Coupons, phone numbers, and enquiry forms help with tracking, but they only capture customers who use those specific response methods.
  • Attribution becomes weaker when several offline channels run together and the business cannot separate which one created the sale.
